Warren mourns popular public servant

Posted

Members of the Warren police and fire departments are mourning the death of one of their most popular and beloved members. Matt Harris, a police dispatcher and lieutenant with Rough and Ready Engine 5, passed away early Tuesday morning. He was 38.

Police and fire officials acknowledged the passing of their friend and colleague Tuesday, but did not have details yet on memorial services. Mr. Harris, known as an affable, positive and friendly public servant, loved Warren and its police and fire departments. In an article written to mark the retirement of former Warren Fire Chief Al Galinelli last October, he talked about how much public service has meant to him:

"One of the proudest things for me now is I'm a lieutenant in this fire department," he said. It's "a brotherhood."

Details on memorial and service arrangements will be posted at www.eastbayri.com, as they become available.
