Vote no on all four Charter proposals

To the editor,
Just say No – “Hell No” - to the Yellow
I hope I got your attention with the title because all of us voting in East Providence on November 6th will be voting a yellow ballot along with the regular white one and I am sure you know how I am voting on that yellow ballot - Hell No! The council majority Bruce Rogers, Tommy Rose and Katie Kleyla have voted to have 4 Charter change questions on that yellow ballot – 2 sides – and I am sure you are wondering where did these changes come from??? Let me enlighten you as to what changes they want.
Question No. 11 asks us to change our Charter to increase the term of all council and school committee members from two years to four. Our city is now being run by a budget commission because of the way the council majority has failed to address our financial issues and yet this same majority wants four years to make the problem worse. And all this with no recall provision. That’s right, we can’t get them out for four years – no recall at all. You know my opinion – Hell No!
Question No. 10 wants us to change our Charter so that the city manager, city solicitor, city clerk and probate judge don’t have to live in the city – Yes our 50 year old Charter requires all of them to live here in East Providence but our council majority wants us to change it. Our city manager can recommend raising our taxes or reducing police and fire protection but he or she can live in Seekonk, Rehoboth or Barrington and not have to worry. We will pay the city manager, city solicitor, city clerk and probate judge but they don’t have to live in the City and pay taxes here or know what it is like to live here – you know my opinion on these changes – Hell No!
Question No.10 also asks us to allow the council to reorganize the finance department. The only thing that needs reorganizing in this City is the council itself. We have that opportunity on November 6th to say “Hell No” to the yellow and “Hell No” to the council members running for re-election who proposed these Charter Changes; Bruce Rogers and Tommy Rose.
There are two questions on the yellow ballot that were actually proposed by the budget commission, Question No.8 to change our fiscal year which actually would be a good idea if the council majority had agreed that a fiscal impact plan be accomplished first but they didn’t, and Question No.9 to have a rainy day fund put into our charter – but the council could add a rainy day fund by ordinance without the need to change our charter so I am going to be consistent with my opinion on all these changes – Just say No – “Hell No” – to all the yellow.
So East Providence residents on November 6th, when you go to vote and you are handed that yellow ballot, remember this line - “Hell No” to the yellow. Reject the changes.
To all those who object to my use of the word “Hell”. Please feel free to tell your friends to “Just Say No” “Heck No” or “No No No” to the yellow as long as you all vote NO – Reject - on all the yellow questions.
It is time for a change in East Providence but not to our Charter - to our City Council!
