Viveiros unseats Duarte as Westport school chairman

Posted

Michelle Duarte won reelection to the School Committee last Tuesday but a day later she lost her committee chairmanship.

Instead, committee member Michael Sullivan nominated Antonio Viveiros to the post and Mr. Viveiros was elected in a 4-1 vote on committee reorganization night Wednesday..

The only vote against Mr. Viveiros came from Ms. Duarte who had indicated a desire to keep the chairmanship, touting the experience and stability she could offer. With no nomination, however, she was out of the running.

She did, however, win  the vice chairmanship in a 3-2 decision — the two no votes coming from Mr. Sullivan and new committee member Melissa Pacheco.

The day before, Ms. Pacheco had been the top vote-getter (908 votes) in a three-way race for two School Committee seats. Ms. Duarte finished second with 832 votes.
