Vieira appointed Selectmen chair

Posted
Westport's Board of Selectmen last week picked Antone Vieira Jr. to serve as the board's new chairman. The vote, at Tuesday's reorganizational meeting, was unanimous (Mr. Vieira was the only nominee). Mr. Vieira was nominated by Richard Spirlet who has been serving as the board's chairman for the past two years. He, in turn, was named vice chairman, also by unanimous vote. Selectman R. Michael Sullivan was unanimously selected to serve again as the board's clerk. Later in the meeting, the board quickly approved the warrant for the May 7 town meeting and agreed to a 10-year cable contract with Charter Communications.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
