Van-Go Bus Tour: The Lowell Textile Mills & The New England Quilt Museum

Posted

In the spirit of Alegria, a summer of honoring Portuguese art and industry, BAM is heading to Lowell to tour their local cultural sites, on Thursday, August 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Discover the Continuing Revolution. Lowell’s water-powered textile mills catapulted the nation – including immigrant families and early female factory workers – into an uncertain new industrial era. Nearly 200 years later, the changes that began here still reverberate in our shifting global economy. Explore Lowell, a living monument to the dynamic human story of the Industrial Revolution.

Thirty years ago a group of enthusiastic New England quilters began to dream of establishing a regional quilt museum. That dream became a reality when the New England Quilt Museum (NEQM) board of directors met for the first time in June 1987. Decades later, the NEQM continues to advance the mission first conceived by its founding mothers and has become one of the most vibrant and treasured small museums in the Northeast.

The coach will leave from the Municipal Lot on Thames Street in Bristol at 9:30 am and depart New Bedford at 3:30 pm. Please pack a lunch, otherwise provisions can be purchased on location. Cost is $30 for transportation and admission fees. To register, visit bristolartmuseum.org or call Traci at 401-253-4400.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
