Unbeaten Mariners beat Tigers for D-III tennis title

A day after Tiverton’s dominant 4-0 semifinal victory over Toll Gate, a team with similar record, the Tigers fell to undefeated Narragansett in Sunday’s championship at Slater Park.

Just as the Tigers had made quick 4-0 work of Toll Gate in the semis, the Mariners dispatched Tiverton 4-0 (after four straight match wins, victory is declared).

The Tigers knew they faced a challenge, having started their season with a 6-1 loss to the eventual champs.

Narragansett has now won the Division III title twice in the past four years and was never really challenged in any of its 16 wins en-route to this year’s championship.

In games that counted toward Sunday’s 4-0 win:

Narragansett’s Ben Farman beat Tiverton’s Zack Pacheco 6-3, 6-1 at first singles;

Andrew Kitson beat Tiverton’s Steve Laquerre 6-2, 6-4 at second singles;

Kieran Maynard beat Tiverton’s Dylan Clark 6-3, 6-1 at third singles;

Owen McCadden and Jacob Lubic beat Tiverton’s Carson Hart and Danny Lopes 6-1, 6-0.

The Tigers finished their superb season 11-3 in division, 14-3 overall.
