Two Westport firefighters hurt in fall from roof

Posted

Two Westport firefighters were taken to area hospitals for observation and treatment after they fell from a roof while fighting a chimney fire at 153 American Legion Highway (Route 177) Thursday night.

A Fire Department spokesman had no update on their conditions early Thursday and did not identify the two.

One of the men fell about 20 feet to the ground; he was taken to Rhode Island Hospital at around 8:15 p.m. The other's man's fall was said to have been broken by a dormer and he was transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital.

The cause of the mishap is under investigation although cold temperatures and slippery conditions are considered a possibility.

Tiverton was called to assist in fighting the blaze. The fire was extinguished quickly and damage was said to be limited primarily to the chimney area along with some smoke and water damage.
