Town set to celebrate Tiverton Days

Three-day event returns this weekend

Posted

TIVERTON — All 15,580 residents of Tiverton — that's the census figure for the total town population — and their friends and family and others from elsewhere, are invited to Festivities at venues around town (see schedule below) will include a beach-front bonfire, a lighted night-time off-shore flotilla from the yacht club, a parade down Main Road, rock painting, an outdoor movie, and yoga at Grinnells' Beach.

"The intent was to build community spirit and community pride," said Linda Larsen, one of the organizers of the occasion. She was speaking to the Tiverton Town Council on July 10, on the night the council voted unanimously to sponsor the event.
"We have a lot to celebrate in this community, and we have an opportunity to come together," Ms. Larsen said. "Everybody is welcome."
"Celebrate Tiverton," as the occasion had previously been known, was a town-wide series or events such as those planned for next weekend, that were held about this time of the year in 2013, 2014, and 2016.
It did not take place last year, but is returning with a flourish this year. "Now it's back," said Ms. Larsen, "with a new name — officially 'Tiverton Days' going forward." Unlike previous years, there will be no 5K race this year, no Saturday BBQ, no story-telling event.
This year, for the first time, it will have town sponsorship (and town insurance coverage). Police detail officers — eight for the parade and four for the bonfire — will cost in the range of $2,160, Police Chief Thomas Blakey told the council the night it voted to sponsor the event.
All events will be on town property, and are for all ages. All events are free; no fees will be charged for any.
"This will be a town approved event, run and overseen by the town. But we'll cover the costs. We're more than willing to pay for the services the town is providing," Ms. Larsen said. "Taxpayers will not be paying anything."
She said local businesses have been very supportive. "A lot of them are happy to see it coming back again," she said.
Ms. Larsen said a volunteer group of about 10 people started meeting weekly in about March at the library to help organize the return of the event. The group has its own Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/tiverton days.
