Town moderator will miss tonight's FTM in Barrington

Former moderator Allan Klepper selected as likely replacement

Posted

The person responsible for running Barrington's financial town meeting will not be attending this year's financial town meeting.

Town moderator Julia Califano contacted other town officials on Tuesday morning, May 22, and told them that she was sick and would not be able to run this year's FTM.

That news sent people searching for a replacement for Wednesday night's meeting, during which residents are asked to vote on the proposed municipal, school and capital improvements budgets.

On Wednesday morning, Barrington Town Council President wrote that the town council was planning to meet just prior to the FTM and would be addressing the town moderator situation.

"As it happens, the Town Council was holding a brief meeting before the FTM anyway so we are adding the issue to our agenda and I will propose that the Town Council appoint Allan Klepper to fill the role of moderator tonight," he wrote.

Mr. Carroll added during a later interview: "It is an unusual situation. As far as I know, it is unprecedented."

Mr. Carroll said that when Ms. Califano realized she would not be able to attend this year's FTM, she suggested the town contact Mr. Klepper.

Mr. Carroll said the town is fortunate to have such a capable replacement as Mr. Klepper, who had served as town moderator for a number of years before Ms. Califano was voted into the position.

The Barrington Financial Town Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. tonight, May 23, at the high school auditorium.
