Tiverton tennis tops PCD, now 2-0

TIVERTON — The Tiverton boys tennis team edged Providence Country Day  in Tiverton Tuesday to improve to 2-0. The team had previously beaten Warwick Vets.

CoachJeff Heath said tthea key to the match came down to first doubles where Lia Thornton and Dominic Payer fought off a hard-to-beat PCD first doubles. Tom O'Hara also played extremely well at 4th singles to clinch the match for Tiverton.  This makes Tiverton 2-0 in league play this year (we beat Warwick Vets on this past Tuesday).

 

Singles:

1 Joe DiOrio (PCD) def. Andy Sampaio (Tiv) 6-0, 6-0

2 Ozan Cermile (PCD) def. Rob Walsh (Tiv) 6-1, 6-1

3 Matt G. (PCD) def. Dylan Clement (Tiv) 6-4, 6-3

4 Tom O'Hara (Tiv) def. Tom Wheeler (PCD) 6-2, 6-0

 

Doubles:

1. Lia Thornton/Dominic Payer (Tiv) def. Max L./Nick Pazia (PCD) 6-1, 6-4

2. Amy Thornton/Rachel Mauricio (Tiv) def. Joshua Sholes/Frank Yau (PCD) 6-2, 6-2

3. Owen Flanagan/Avery Pacheco (Tiv) def. Matt B./Eddie  Chen (PCD) 6-0, 6-0

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far.
