Tiverton Democrats endorse charter candidates

TIVERTON —The Tiverton Democratic Town Committee (TDTC) will endorse eight candidates for the July 18=Tiverton Charter Commission election:

• Michael Burk (D)

• Michael Janick (D)

•Gregory Jones (I)

• Jason Mello (D)

• Kimberly Sutherland (I)

• David Perry (D)

• Andrea Souza (D)

• Donna Edwards (D)

“The Town Charter is Tiverton’s Constitution and the Charter Commission must be composed of members who put community first, understand the complexity of the work ahead, are able to listen to the concerns of residents and can develop recommendations that move Tiverton forward,” said Mike Burk, TDTC chairman and Charter Commission candidate. “We believe that these eight candidates will serve our community well and ensure that the Charter review process is as comprehensive and thoughtful as it deserves.”

The eight endorsed candidates include six registered Democrats and two registered Independents (Unaffiliated). While three have experience with holding an elected public office (Burk, Perry and Edwards), the remaining five have never held elected public office. “This follows the practice of the TDTC over the last several years of getting new faces to the table, promoting Democratic candidates while also working and supporting Independents who share the values of the TDTC.”

“While numerous candidates not supported by the TDTC have led voters to believe that the only issue to address is the Financial Town Referendum, the Charter covers all aspects of municipal government while providing for the checks and balances necessary to be accountable to voters,” Mr. Burk said. “It includes, among other things, the duties of elected and appointed officials, the handling of elections, bonding restrictions, and recall and override provisions. Vote for those who will be open to your voice and new ideas. Those running on a narrow budget platform and who want “no change” will restrict voter choices for thoughtful updates and improvements”

The Tiverton Charter Commission election is to be held on Tuesday, July 18, 2017. Polls will be open from 7 am – 8 pm.
