Tiverton church cancels drive-through Ash Wednesday event

TIVERTON — The "Drive Through" Ash Wednesday ceremony, originally scheduled for this Wednesday, Feb. 13 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, at 1956 Main Road, Tiverton, has been cancelled due to snow and related safety concerns.

The event was to have been jointly conducted from 6:30 - 9 a.m. by the Rev. John Higginbotham of Holy Trinity and Rev. Bill Sterritt of Amicable Congregational Church of 3736 Main Road, also of Tiverton.

The idea, said Rev. Higginbotham, was "to provide ashes to people who have to commute to work and couldn't get to church on the first day of Lent." They would drive into the church parking lot, get ashes and a cup of coffee, then turn around and depart, he said. But that won't happen now.

"After consultation with Chief Thomas Blakey of the Tiverton Police Department, Holy Trinity Church will cancel the 'drive through distribution of ashes' event in the church parking lot on Ash Wednesday morning," Rev. Higginbotham said.

"With the snow piled high, it could present a serious safety issue in

terms of visibility and vehicle maneuvering in the church parking lot," he said.
