Tiverton boys tie in soccer Injury Fund match

Posted

TIVERTON — Last Thursday evening, eight teams from the East Bay area met at Tiverton High School for the annual Rhode Island Injury Fund Tournament. For the Tiverton Tigers, it was an opportunity to test their skills against a team they won’t face during the regular season, and, with the scrimmage ending in a tie, may be a sign of good things to come for the team.

Playing under the lights, the Division 3 Tiverton Tigers squared off against the Barrington Eagles, a Division 1 team. At the end of the first of two 20-minute periods, there was no score, despite the Eagles’ five scoring attempts.

Tiverton coach, Tom Murray, encouraged his players during the half-time break.

“Zero, zero at half-time says enough. Keep it up guys,” he told his team.

While the first half gave Tiverton’s starting line-up the first opportunity to score, it was early in the second half that Tiverton’s Andrew Bonoan put one in the Eagles’ net to lead 1-0 early in the second period.

Throughout the game, eight of Barrington’s nine goal attempts were either blocked or missed. Barrington’s strong offense allowed them to control the ball most of the game, working the ball among teammates to get into scoring position. Although the Eagles doubled the shots on goal that the Tigers attempted, the Tigers proved themselves defensively.

With under two minutes left to play, Barrington senior, Finton Lalor, tied the score with his shot that made it passed the Tigers’ goal keeper. The game ended on a 1 – 1 tie.

After tying with a division 3 team, Tiverton appeared confident going into the regular season schedule.

“I like our toughness,” Coach Murray said of the teams’ grit against the higher division team. “We did it and pushed ourselves.”
