Three Hampden Meadows School fifth-graders were surprised in a special ceremony on Thursday, May 17. Minty Gaitskell, Dahlia Weller, and Athena Gao were honored for their entries in the recent Letters about Literature contest.

Kate Lentz, from RI Center for the Book, came to make the presentation in front of the entire school.

Ms. Lentz reminded the auditorium that Letters about Literature is a Library of Congress reading and writing contest for students in grades 4 through 12. Students at Hampden Meadows School compete in Level 1 for grades 4 to 6.

Ms. Lentz then told the students and staff gathered for the assembly that 264 letters went to Washington DC in the contest, and 43 were sent back as semi-finalists, for state judging. Araminta Gaitskell and Ruoyo "Athena" Gao were Level 1 semi finalists for their Letters about Literature entries. Dahlia Weller was the Level 1 State Winner for her Letter about Literature. Dahlia won a $200 prize, and her letter is now being judged nationally.
