Heidi Chiavaroli debuts 'Freedom’s Ring' at Barrington Books

Posted

On Thursday, August 10 at 6:30 p.m., author Heidi Chiavaroli will visit Barrington Books at 184 County Road for a discussion and signing of her debut novel, Freedom's Ring. Described as a “time slip” novel, the story follows two women, separated by centuries, who must learn to live “Boston strong.”

In contemporary Boston, Anaya David deals with the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing while in Revolutionary Era Boston, Liberty Caldwell witnesses the Boston Massacre and the effects of the War for Freedom. The two women’s lives intertwine, creating an unexpected destiny.

Heidi Chiavaroli was always a writer. She kept a journal for years and made her own book in the third grade which she both wrote and illustrated, but she never considered it as a serious career path. After graduating from Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School in 2000, she married her high school sweetheart, Dan, and bought a home in Swansea. The two started a family and now have two boys, James and Noah.

As a young mother, Heidi became a fan of Christian fiction and realized she “wanted to inspire people by writing.” So, when her babies would nap, she would write. She kept it a secret, even from her husband, until she decided to enter the American Christian Fiction Writer’s (ACFW) Genesis Contest. The contest was for unpublished writers and offered feedback on the submitted manuscripts. “My first time submitting, I got terrible scores,” admits Chiavaroli, “but useful feedback.”

Chiavaroli continued to write and submit until she won the Genesis Award in 2014. Soon after, she acquired an agent who started submitting her manuscripts to publishing houses. “Tyndale was my dream publisher,” says Chiavaroli. “They published so many of my favorite authors that I was thrilled when I heard they wanted to publish me!”

Lots of research went into Freedom’s Ring as Chiavaroli paints a realistic portrait of what it was like to live in Boston during a very contentious period in history. “I wanted to show that the British weren’t all bad. There are two sides to every story.” In fact, Liberty Caldwell, the protagonist of the 1770 storyline, falls in love with a British officer and must make a hard decision when her brother is killed during the Boston Massacre.

Love plays a large part in the contemporary time line as well.  Set two years after the Boston Marathon Bombing, Anaya David has secluded herself from her family because she feels guilty that her niece lost a leg in the bombing while Anaya was saved by an unnamed stranger. The stranger handed her a ring inscribed with the Latin phrase, “Victory belongs to the one who is strong,” promising that he will find her again.

Full of historical detail, star-crossed romance and plenty of action, Freedom’s Ring will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers. Chiavaroli maintains a authentic voice for each of her narrators, and ties the two separate time lines together in a satisfying conclusion. Chiavaroli remains true to her faith by showing the reader two women going through hard times that “Find peace in a bigger hope,” concludes Chiavaroli, “Something beyond our worldly circumstances.” To read more about the author and her book, please visit her website at heidichiavaroli.com.
