Thank you to the 4Pi Award donor
To the editor:
On June 8, 2013, my son Devin Costa, graduated from Mt. Hope High School, exactly 40 years to the date that I graduated from the old Bristol High. Awards night was the previous night. I have always been proud of Devin, but you can't imagine how I felt each time his name was called to receive each of the five awards that he received.
Devin was one of a few seniors who received recognition for having perfect attendance senior year. One young man received special recognition for having perfect attendance all 13 years. My congratulations go off to this student and his family for this amazing accomplishment. I was hoping Devin would be recognized for his perfect attendance for all four years, but this category was not addressed.
Two weeks ago, my 90-year-old mother noticed an article in the Bristol Phoenix stating that an anonymous donor had set up the "4 Pi Award," awarding $720 to any student, starting with the Class of 2013 for having perfect attendance all four years at Mt. Hope. The student with perfect attendance for all 13 years was the first to receive this award. Yesterday, I found out that Devin was the second and only other student to receive this award.
I immediately called Devin at his new school, Rhode Island College. With tears of joy, I congratulated him and told him for the millionth time how proud I am of him.
To the wonderful donor, Devin had perfect attendance in high school because he likes school, knows the importance of school, and has always tried his best in everything he has attempted; not because the thought there would be a monetary reward for it. Your scholarship was the icing on the cake. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for acknowledging my son's achievement. Hopefully, Devin has set the bar for future graduates of Mt. Hope High School.
