Summer Music Preview photos and video

BRISTOL—Drum corps from New Jersey, Illinois, Ohio, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania converged on July 3, at Mt. Hope High School to compete for bragging rights at the 2013 Summer Music Preview. The Cadets of Allentown, PA, won the World Class competition edging out the Phantom Regiment and the Boston Crusaders. The Spartans from Nashua New Hampshire, took the Open Class over the 7th Regiment. This year's competition also featured a pair of Bristolians. Allyssa Cordeiro sang our country's National Anthem to open the show and Nathaniel Gomes played the quad drums for the 7th Regiment. Riverside's Richie Price played "God Bless America" on his trumpet during intermission. Fireworks began when the Bluecoats played an encore as judges tallied up the scores.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
