Stephen L. Mascena, age 100, formerly of Bristol


Mr. Stephen L. Mascena, age 100, formerly of Fox Hill Avenue, Bristol, died Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Orchard View Manor, East Providence, RI.  He was the husband of the late Emily (Proto) Mascena.

Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, he was a son of the late Antonio and Nunziata (Russo) Mascena.  He was a foreman and superintendent for many years for the former Carr Fulflex Co. and former Collins and Aikman Co. and the former M&F Worsted Mill and lastly worked in the maintenance department of Roger Williams University, retiring in 1975. He attend Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, he was a founding member of the Cup Defenders Association, a member of the former Bristol Community Band, he was a life member of the Bristol Council # 379, Knights of Columbus and the Bristol County Lodge of Elks # 1860 and was a member of the La Bella Sicilia Society and the Leonardo Da Vinci Lodge, Sons of Italy, a member of the AARP and the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.  He served the town of Bristol for a number of years as a member of the Board of Canvassers. Stephen was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Bristol.

He is survived by three children, Nancy Josephs (John) of Barrington, Anthony J. Mascena (Jill) of Cherry Hill, NJ and Stephen W. Mascena (Marcia) of Warwick, a sister, Carmela M. "Millie" Turcotte of Portsmouth and a brother, Angelo "Macy" Mascena of Bristol, seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.  In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Phoebe M. Lawrence, Connie M. Jenkinson, Mary M. Pasqual and two brothers, Stephen and Santo "Sam" Mascena.

Funeral Services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State Street, Bristol.  Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol.  Visitation will be Tuesday morning only at 8:30 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 222 Richmond St., Suite 204, Providence, RI 02903 or online at or to the Alzheimers Disease Association, 245 Waterman Street, Providence, RI  02906 or online at For online condolences, shared memories, information and directions go to

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
