Split match leaves Tigers golf team in the playoff hunt

Posted

The Tiverton High School golf split their dual match at Wanumetonomy Country Club on Monday. The Tigers beat host team, Middletown 215-217, but lost to East Providence who shot a low team score of 189.

Tiverton is now 4-6 in the Eastern Division and currently holds fifth place, the last playoff spot going into the teams final match of the regular season against Rogers and Bay View.

“Our goal every year is to make the playoffs. The team has worked hard this year to improve and I’m thrilled to be in position to make the playoffs,” said Head Coach Adam Tracy.

If the Tigers finish in the top five, the team would get a chance to play in a playoff match at Metacomet with East Providence and Bay View. The teams would compete in a one-day playoff round for the third berth from the division into state championship to be held at Cranston Country Club on May 29th and 30th.

Tigers Senior Greg Petrarca and junior Drew Germain have been steady for the Tigers all year. Petrarca again led the team with a low score of 48 at Wanumetonomy and Germain shot a 50.

“Greg and Drew are playing well,” said coach Tracy.

They are all competitive guys and push one another to get better.”

Junior three player TJ Mello has been hot as of late coach Tracy said.

Mello chipped in with a 53 on Monday and and freshman Greg Cirillo shot a 64.

“Greg came in with the score to edge us past Middletown for the win,” coach Tracy said. “It was a cool experience for the team. Every player and every score is important. They all need to play their best.”

Others members of the team include senior Cole Simmons and sophomore Sam Costa.
