Shoreline Bikeway to discuss rail trail possibilities on island

The Aquidneck Island Planning Commission will host a Shoreline Bikeway event on Thursday, Dec. 6.

Attending will be Carl Knoch of the Rails to Trails Conservancy who brings a national perspective to successful rail and trail combination projects.

The Shoreline Bikeway envisions an eight-mile recreational trail running parallel to the existing railroad tracks on Aquidneck Island's west side. When compete, the trail would include two bridge connections (including he Sakonnet River Bridge) that would create a 60-mile trail network.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the Community College of Rhode Island auditorium, 1 John H. Chafee Blvd., Newport.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
