Sergeant Matthew Scott Patton, 23, of Acacia Road, passed away on May 13, 2013 at Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Born in Providence, he was the son of John and Lynn (Steger) Patton.  He was the brother of Evan Patton, Joshua Patton and Caley Patton; grandson of Billy L. Patton and the late June (Orr) Patton and Paul and Bette Steger; nephew of Michael Patton, Karin Patton, Kevin Patton-Hock, Bruce Steger, Donna Jelley, Stacey Steger and Jody Johnson.

Matthew was a 2008 graduate of Mt. Hope High School and enlisted in the US Army in August of 2008.

His funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 25th from 4 to 6 p.m. at the George C. Lima Funeral Home 367 High Street.  Military Honors will be rendered at 6 p.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
