Santa touches down by Prudence lighthouse

Santa touched down at Sand Point Light on Prudence Island bright and early (8 a.m.) on Sunday, Dec. 8, after flying in from the southwest  aboard a helicopter. He was assisted by Friends of Flying Santa, an organization that began flying gifts out to lighthouse keepers in 1929. Maine floatplane pilot William Wincapaw started the tradition as a way of thanking those who helped him navigate along the coast by keeping the beacons lit. Glenn Young photos.
