Ruth E. Howard Sherblom
Ruth (Rae) Ellen Howard Sherblom graduated from Bates College in 1945 and married Edward Sherblom. She became the director of the Marginal Street Settlement House in East Boston, Mass., while her husband continued his education at Andover Newton Theological School and became an ordained minister. Rae and Ed served the First Baptist Church in North Taunton, Mass., the Central Baptist Church in Tiverton, and collaborated in the development of a new congregation, Founders Memorial Baptist Church in Portsmouth.
While raising their family, Rae earned her M.A. in education and then taught for many years in the Tiverton Public Schools, retiring in the 1980's. Rae was pre-deceased by her husband Edward and son David.
During the last 20 years of her life, Rae continued to volunteer with service organizations, wrote a book, spoke to groups of parents of children with AIDS; assisted in church offices and on pastoral visits, volunteered with a local library, made blankets for people in need, and traveled. Rae maintained an enormous interest in the activities of her busy and expanding family, most commonly using e-mail to communicate.
Rae died June 1, 2013, 36 days after the celebration of her 90th birthday She is survived by her sister Mary Cadwell; nine children, Peggy Matteson, John, Don, Jim, Patricia, Steve, Paul, Becky, and Joe Sherblom; nine grandchildren, Jenny Swider, Eric and Ryan Matteson, Lucien and Zoe Carpentier, Sarah, Robert, MIchael and Kimberly Sherblom; and nine great-grandchildren, Cole, Kylie, Courtney and Connor Swider, Emily, Julia, Andrew, Hunter and Laney Matteson.
Rae will be remembered as a person of faith, a humble humanitarian, and a consummate mother.
