Ruth A. McDermott, 91, Bristol
Born in Attleboro, MA, a daughter of the late George F. and Katherine (Montague) Lovely, she was a life-long area resident, and a graduate of Attleboro High School and the URI School of Library Science. Mrs. McDermott worked as a library assistant at the Deborah Cook Sales Public Library in Pawtucket for many years until her retirement in 1982. She was a member of the Blackstone Valley Historical Society, the Rhode Island Historical Society, volunteered at the Rhode Island Veterans’ Home, served as a docent at the John Brown House in Providence, and was an active parishioner at St. Raymond’s Church in Providence. She was a phenomenal cook, and enjoyed reading, gardening, serving on civic and church committees, and traveling with her late husband.
She leaves behind a daughter, Maureen McDermott of Louisville, KY; a son, Daniel McDermott and his wife Roberta of Bristol; her grandson, Joseph McDermott of Bristol; her great-grandchildren, Owen, Liam, Noah and Jack, sons of Joseph McDermott and Hilary Grieve-McDermott; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Frank, Edward, Thomas, Joseph, James, Leo and Mary Lovely.
Arrangements are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24. Funeral services are at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Bristol. Burial will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans’ Cemetery in Exeter.
