Robert Saulnier, 68, of Providence


Robert Saulnier, 68, of Providence, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Lucy (Pacheco) Saulnier. He was a Warren resident for many years and had served in the Rhode Island National Guard. He retired from The Providence Journal after 35 years as Pre-publishing Supervisor.

He is survived by his sister, Donna Barboza of Warren; his niece, Gina Miller; his nephew, Brian Barboza; and his great-nieces and nephews, Reagan and Stefan Miller and Cole and Emma Barboza.

Donations can be made in his memory to the National Foundation for Cancer Research, 4600 East West Highway Suite 525, Bethesda MD 20814. Arrangements with Smith Funeral and Memorial Services in Warren were private.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
