Riverside girls softball beats Chariho, heads to semifinals



The Riverside girls softball team crushed undefeated Chariho, 10-1, in the quarterfinals game on Friday afternoonThe Vikings offense exploded for seven runs in the first inning. Raevyn Watson led off with a walk.  Caroline Feeley then executed a perfect bunt. Consecutive singles by Alyssa Guarino and Shelby Mello scored Watson and Feeley. Chariho's ace pitcher then walked the next five batters and the Vikings added some timely hitting that opened the flood gates for a Riverside, 7-0, lead.

Vikings pitcher Taylor Babcock struck-out six and allowed just six hits, two walks, and one run, in the win. The defense played solidly throughout the game.

The Vikings scored again in the fifth inning with singles from Taylor Babcock and Raevyn Watson. The Vikings tacked on insurance runs in the sixth and the seventh innings to round out the scoring. 

The Riverside Lady Vikings will play in the semifinals game at Bentley Field in North Cumberland on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
