Residents walking along a stretch of beach bordering the Rhode Island Country Club property in Barrington spotted a dolphin washed up on the shore.
Officials from Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut identified the deceased animal as a Risso's dolphin, which are reportedly found all over the world in temperate and tropical waters.
They are usually found in deep water but close to land, stated an online source.
"They range as far north as the Gulf of Alaska and southern Greenland and as far south as Tierra del Fuego."
Risso's dolphins feed almost exclusively on squid.
Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that an official from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management had identified the deceased animal.
