RIPTA buses free Wednesday due to air quality alert

Posted

STATEWIDE — Due to anticipated high levels of pollution and/or ozone, all regular Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) buses and trolleys, excluding special services, will be free on Wednesday, Aug. 27.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is predicting that air quality will reach unhealthy levels in portions of Rhode Island during the afternoon on Wednesday.

A very hot and very humid air mass with west to southwest winds will be present at that time, which will lead to unhealthy air conditions, according to DEM.
