Rep. Edwards named House deputy majority leader

Rep. John G. "Jay" Edwards (D – Dist. 70,  Portsmouth, Tiverton) has been named senior deputy majority leader of the Rhode Island House of Representatives for the 2013-2014 legislative session. He is now serving his third term in the House of Representatives. “I am honored to have been chosen by Speaker Fox to serve in this capacity,” Rep. Edwards said after the announcement. “I take my leadership responsibilities very seriously and I will do everything I can to support my colleagues as we continue to break barriers and help our communities thrive. I’m looking forward to a great legislative session.” As senior deputy majority leader, Rep. Edwards serves as a member of the House leadership team. His duties include overseeing the 10 additional deputy majority leaders, who will work closely with House Majority Leader Nicholas A. Mattiello to ensure that party members are properly informed on upcoming measures and votes.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
