PORTSMOUTH — The 14th annual Common Fence Point 5 Mile Road Race and 3 Mile Fun Walk is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20, at the Common Fence Point Community Hall on Anthony Road.

The event is a fund-raiser for the Portsmouth High School Music Boosters, which raises money to support chorus, band, color guard and drama activities at Portsmouth High School. The money raised assists with trips, scholarships, uniforms and extras not provided by school department funds.

Members of the public can support the event by getting involved as a runner, walker, sponsor, volunteer at the race or a spectator.

Pre-registration is $25 if you do it online before Aug. 14; it’s $30 after that and on the day of the race. Register online at www.3CRaceProductions.com.

Tech shirts are given to all pre-registrants and as available on race day. The first three male and female finishers will be awarded cash prizes. There will be a post-race party with refreshments, raffles and a deejay.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
