Reception for Portsmouth, England guests tonight
PORTSMOUTH — If you're going to the Gala Welcome Reception tonight (Aug. 29) at the Glen Manor House, you might want to say hello to the lord mayor of our sister city of Portsmouth, England: Councillor Lynne Stagg.
But how exactly do you do that?
Thankfully, the Portsmouth 375th Committee has posted some helpful tips on its website for people who are going to the gala event that will also be attended by the mayors of the Portsmouth cities of New Hampshire and Virginia.
The reception is from 5-7 p.m. Limited tickets, at $25 each, are available; visit www.portsmouthri375.com for more information). The Glen Manor House is located at 3 Frank Coelho Drive.
The lord mayor, in the most formal sense, is referred to as "the Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth" regardless of gender. If desired, the name, preceded by "councillor," may follow the office. "The Right Worshipful" should always be placed before "The Lord Mayor." When speaking to her, it's proper to address her as "my lord mayor" or "lord mayor."
The lord mayor will be accompanied by her lifelong lady friend, Anne Taulbut, whom one would to refer to as "my lady mayoress" or "lady mayoress." (The lady mayoress is not referred to as "the right worshipful.")
What to wear?
Also, if you don't know what to wear to the gala reception, the dress code is "Portsmouth summer casual," which the 375th Committee says is a "unique combination of elegance and informality similar to, but much better than, 'Newport Casual.' It beckons the thought of, 'Let us go for a short sail on my yacht.'"
“It doesn’t have to be really dressed up, but it shouldn’t be really dressed down," said Doug Smith, chairman of the Portsmouth 375th Steering Committee. "That’s how we define Portsmouth summer casual. We made it up.”
It's suggested that men wear a collared shirt with a pair of slacks, he said. Boat shoes — with or without socks — is acceptable, and a light summer sport jacket can be worn to complement the attire.
Women can wear suitably comfortable, casual but elegant similar summer cocktail attire.
But such instructions are usually unnecessary for the fairer sex.
"Women somehow automatically know what to wear. I don’t know how," said Mr. Smith.
