Potential buyer for Warren's India restaurant

A Providence restaurateur who spent years running restaurants in Aruba and Providence could be the next owner of the old India restaurant at 520 Main St. Steven Correa has signed a purchase and sales agreement on the property and hopes to close by late December or early January.

He and his attorney, Josh Celeste of Duffy & Sweeney, appeared before the Warren Town Council Tuesday night to set up a public hearing next month, where they will ask for a full BV liquor and entertainment license. Mr. Celeste said the building’s purchase is contingent on several factors, including the issuance of that license.

“We hope the town will support us coming in and helping the place,” he said Thursday morning.

Mr. Correa runs the small Aruba Steve’s restaurant near Johnson & Wales in Providence, but has also owned and operated several others on the island of Aruba, including the famous Smokey Joe’s.

“He’s probably the only human being who’s ever moved from Aruba to Providence,” his attorney joked.

The plan for the former India follows a similar theme to his other ventures: Island food, cocktails and good music.

Thanks to his past business, Mr. Celeste said his client won’t incur a lot of debt purchasing the building, though there will be quite a bit of work to do as the restaurant has been closed for three years.

Mr. Celeste did not disclose the planned purchase price. However, it is owned by SRC Singh LLC in Barrington and has been on the market for several years. The most recent list price was $849,000.
