PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth High School junior Nikki Merrill capped off an impressive season with two victories in the Rhode Island Indoor Track State Championship held Saturday at the Providence Career & Technical Academy.

Merrill came in first in the 600-meter run in a time of 1:37.37, and was also triumphant in the 3,000-meter run, finishing in 10:02.41.

Brianna Shablom, a senior, came in fifth place in the weight throw with a best toss of 50 feet, 9.5 inches.

The lady Patriots came in sixth as a team, with 22 points. The overall winner was La Salle Academy (74 points), followed by Barrington (56).

On the boys’ side, the top finishers included senior Martin Lasky, who came in second in the pole vault with a best effort of 11 feet, 6 inches.

Ethan Shea took sixth place in the 600-meter run, clocking a time of 1:25.16.
