29th annual Heart & Sole Walk for Animals held Sunday

PORTSMOUTH — Four-legged friends took over Glen Park Sunday afternoon for the 29th annual Heart & Sole Walk for Animals. The event raised money to help the Potter League for Animals care for more than 2,000 homeless animals each year.

Animal-lovers and their dogs were invited to take part in a one- or two-mile walk around Glen Park, as well as enjoy refreshments, music, demonstrations, pet contests, a Dogtopia and Flealess Market made up of pet-related vendors and sponsors, activities for kids and several food trucks.

The event featured a special appearance by Ruby, a champion police search-and-rescue dog, who demonstrated her knife-finding skills along with her handler, Rhode Island State Trooper Dan O’Neill.

Ruby, a 7-year-old Australian shepherd/Boston Collie mix, helped save the life of a Glocester teenager who had gone missing for 36 hours in October 2017. Ruby found the teenager, who was in bad condition at the time but went on to make a full recovery.

Ruby has won a Search and Rescue Hero Dog Award from the American Humane Associations Hero Dog Awards. She will be featured on NBC’s Today Show on Friday, Oct. 19.
