Portsmouth swimmers improve at Bay View Invitational

PORTSMOUTH — They didn't score points, but the Portsmouth High School girl swimmers posted some impressive time improvements at last Sunday's Bay View Invitational meet at the new Brown University pool.

Competing against almost every Rhode Island high school team from all of the divisions as well as several top Massachusetts teams, the young Portsmouth squad can be proud of its effort, said coach Stephen Carter.

"All of our 13 girls swam a better time at the meet than their seed time," the coach said. "Some of the improvements were really significant."

Leading the way was Elizabeth Wheeler who knocked better than six seconds of her time in the 100 butterfly, goon from 125:95 to 1:19.28.

Kathryn Stack lowered her time in the 50 freestyle to 28.72.

Celia Lasky improved her 100 breaststroke time to 1:23.83.

Megan Steen swam a 1:08.23 100 backstroke, and Abigail Macdonald improved her 200 free time to 2:38.18.

"It's been a rebuilding year for us but I saw some excellent progress at that meet," Coach Carter added.
