Portsmouth sets schedule for Christmas tree disposal

PORTSMOUTH — The Department of Public Works (683-0362) will pick up discarded Christmas trees using the following schedule:

Monday, Jan. 7: Precinct 2702 and 2703.   You voted at: Portsmouth Senior Center (2702), Common Fence Point Community Hall (2703)

Tuesday, Jan. 8: Precinct 2704.  You voted at:  Portsmouth High School

Wednesday, Jan. 9: Precinct 2705 and 2706.  You voted at: Melville School (2705), Town Hall Council Chambers (2706)

Thursday, Jan. 10: Precinct 2707.  You voted at: St. Barnabas Church

Friday, Jan. 11: Precinct 2708.  You voted at: Portsmouth Middle School

Trees must be placed at curbside by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day. Trees must not be in plastic bags and must be totally stripped of all decorations and tinsel.

Residents may also bring Christmas trees to the Department of Public Works located off Hedly Street.  Trees will not be accepted at the Transfer Station.

Trees will be recycled into mulch that will be available free of charge to Portsmouth residents.  For more information on when mulch is available, contact the Melville Campground at 682-2424.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
