PORTSMOUTH — A Newport woman was arrested Saturday night, Sept. 22, after she was caught allegedly dealing the prescription drug Suboxone in town.

Sheyliz Nevarez, 37, of 90 Girard Ave., Apt. 151, was charged with the delivery of a Schedule III drug. She was held without bail by a justice of the peace on Sunday and was scheduled  to be re-arraigned in 2nd District Court in Newport Monday morning.

Suboxone, which contains the active ingredients buprenorphine and naloxone, is used to treat adults who are dependent on opioids (either prescription or illegal).

After the Portsmouth Police Detective Division initiated an investigation into the distribution of the drug throughout the area, Ms. Nevarez was identified as a suspect, according to Detective Lt. Michael Arnold.

On Sept. 5, detectives set up surveillance after receiving information that Ms. Nevarez was in the area with a quantity of Suboxone for distribution, Lt. Arnold stated in a press release.

“After observing Nevarez completing a drug transaction in Portsmouth, a warrant was issued for her arrest,” he stated.

On Saturday, Newport Police took Ms. Nevarez into custody on the warrant and she was turned over to Portsmouth Police, Lt. Arnold said.
