Portsmouth Middle School softball team advances

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Middle School girls' softball team is still alive and well in the playoffs, winning its first two games.

Portsmouth won a quarterfinal playoff game Tuesday evening, defeating Gallagher Middle School, 9-2. Down 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Maddie White hit a double and would go on to score the first run of the game for Portsmouth.

Lian Bishop's aggressive base-running led to the go-ahead run in the fifth. The bats then came alive with big hits from Taylor Cofield and Ailish Cafferty.

The team defeated Cole Middle School in the first round of playoffs last Thursday evening, 11-4.

Emma Campbell pitched well for Portsmouth, striking out 11 batters and allowing only one hit. Lucia Billings hit well for Portsmouth and Ailish Cafferty hit a triple in the sixth inning with two strikes to keep Cole at bay.
