Portsmouth has two International Coastal Cleanup sites

PORTSMOUTH — Time to get your bags out for the International Coastal Cleanup this Saturday, Sept. 19.

The annual events invites volunteers all over the world to remove trash from the shores and document what they find. The data is compiled and published in an annual report on marine debris by the Ocean Conservancy. Policymakers use the information to raise awareness about marine debris and reduce the problem at the source.

There are two cleanup locations in Portsmouth:

• Common Fence Point (9 a.m. to noon), led by Mil Kinsella and the Common Fence Point Improvement Association (CFPIA). Meet at the CFPIA Community Hall, 933 Anthony Road.

• Weaver Cove (10 a.m. to noon), led by the Portsmouth Conservation Commission and Clean Ocean Access. The approximate GPS address is 1270 Burma Road.

In addition, Save The Bay is looking for volunteers to help identify and clean up “micro-sites” on Aquidneck Island. “These are beaches and shoreline areas that are not large enough to warrant a full team of volunteers, but are those hidden gems — someone’s favorite little spot along the shore — that are perfect for a few friends or family members,” said July Lewis, Save The Bay’s volunteer manager.

Bags and disposable gloves will be provided at the cleanups. Bring a reusable bottle of water and your own work gloves if you have them. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and come dressed for the weather.

This is a rain-or-shine event and will only be cancelled for thunderstorms or extreme weather.

To find out more about the International Coastal Cleanup and to register as a volunteer, visit savebay.org/icc. To add a micro-site to the beach cleanup list, volunteers should contact Ms. Lewis at 401/272-3540, ext. 130 or jlewis@savebay.org. Clean Ocean Access has scheduled additional coastal cleanups this fall, including several in Portsmouth from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturdays at the following places:

• Oct. 17: Pheasant Drive Beach

• Nov. 14: Corys Lane

• Dec. 12: Gull Cove Fishing Area
