PORTSMOUTH — Carol Strause FitzSimonds of Portsmouth, a printmaker and bookmaker, is in rare company.
She was one of only five American artists invited to exhibit work at the third edition of “Di Carta/Papermade,” the international biennale of works in paper in Schio, Italy.
Her “Beauty in Place #2,” a concertina accordion book of 13 colored pencil drawings and one aquatint print, is on display at the Palazzo Fogazzaro in Schio.
The exhibit began on Dec. 10 and runs through March 25. About 80 other artists from all over the world — particularly Portugal, this edition’s guest of honor — are represented.
Ms. FitzSimonds was contacted in 2016 and asked to create a new book inspired by “place” — What does it mean to be at home and to be able to say: “This is my place?”
The exhibit, organized and curated by the artist Valeria Bertesina, showcases works in paper that will include many different formats such as art prints, art books and installations.
Ms. FitzSimonds won a Best in Show ($1,000) award at the Providence Art Club 2017 Members’ Exhibit for her boxed artist book, “Beauty in Place #1.”
She will be exhibiting in 2018 at the Providence Art Club (June 24 to July 20) and at Syracuse University (Aug. 16 to Sept. 16) in the Juried Society of American Graphic Artists Member Exhibit.
