Portsmouth Abbey boys win EIL baseball championship
PORTSMOUTH — The No. 3 seeded Portsmouth Abbey varsity baseball team avenged earlier losses this season to No. 2 Bancroft and No. 1 Berwick to win the 2013 Eastern Independent League (EIL) Championship, held at Pingree School in South Hamilton, Mass. on Saturday.
The Ravens defeated Bancroft, 13-3, in the semifinal, pounding out 15 hits while watching Michael Stark ('13) pitch five sterling innings. Andrew Evans ('13) went four for four, while Josh Vertentes ('16) went three for four. Rob Tuite ('14) knocked in four runs. Sean Knowlan ('13) and Will Behnke ('15) each scored three runs.
In the championship game, the Ravens overcame a terrific Berwick team, the reigning EIL champions, that entered the game 13-1 on the season by a score of 3-1.
Tommy Biagetti ('14) pitched an outstanding six and two-thirds innings, while Stark came in to get the final out with the tying run on base to earn the save. Knowlan led an outstanding defensive performance that did not produce an error. Evans (two for four) produced the key hit, a two-out, two-RBI single in the fifth inning that broke the 1-1 deadlock.
Five Abbey seniors finished their careers on a very good note: Capt. Sean Knowlan, Andrew Evans and Nick Medley of Portsmouth; Capt. Michael Stark of Middletown; and Michael Sheerin of Newport.
