Police: Medical marijuana grower targeted in theft
The unidentified man called police just after 3 p.m. to report that someone had broken into his shed and stolen his plants. Officers, who were initially unsure what to expect, verified that the man had broken no laws in growing the plants, as he was complying with Rhode Island's medical marijuana law. The law allows people with certain chronic or debilitating conditions to grow as many as 12 plants at a time, and to possess up to 2.5 ounces of cultivated marijuana at a time, for personal use.
Police said Monday that they've no idea how many Warren residents are licensed by the state under the law, as the state does not disseminate that information to local law enforcement. Police were hesitant to release the man's name or exact address, as they said he is operating in compliance with the law. They continue to investigate the theft.
