Police: Boy on motorized scooter collides with pickup truck

Barrington boy rushed to hospital after accident

A pickup truck and a Barrington boy riding a motorized scooter collided near the intersection of Martin Avenue and Boyce Avenue on Monday afternoon, June 26.

The boy, who was under the age of 12, suffered minor injuries during the accident. Police officers and firefighters responded to the scene; rescue workers transported the boy the hospital.

Police said the boy was riding the scooter with some friends at about 3:50 p.m. The group of youngsters was traveling east on Boyce Avenue and turned north onto Martin Avenue. Meanwhile, one vehicle had started to turn onto Boyce but stopped halfway to let the children pass.

A second vehicle, the black pickup truck, was traveling north on Martin Avenue. According to police, the driver of the truck was unable to stop his vehicle quickly enough to avoid the collision.

"He said the child came out of the street so fast he couldn't react," said Barrington Police Chief John LaCross, referring to a statement given by the truck's driver.

Police said the boy may have avoided more serious injuries when he jumped off the scooter just prior to the collision. It was not clear whether the boy was wearing a helmet.

Barrington Fire Department Captain Ed Owens said the accident should serve as a reminder to all motorists to keep an eye out for children and other pedestrians.

Chief LaCross added "School's out and there are a lot more kids out there. Just be careful."
