Even die-hards took 2018 off, when air temperatures in the teens forced event cancellations and postponements across the region. Then there was 2016, when the temperature almost reached 50 degrees at plunge time.
That will not be the case this year, but with a projected temp of about 36 degrees, it won't be awful, either.

If that's all the convincing you need, here are some places in and near the East Bay where you can go for it:
• Portsmouth Polar Bear Plunge; Island Park Beach, Portsmouth (across from Flo's); noon
• Newport Polar Bear Plunge; Easton's Beach, 175 Memorial Blvd., Newport; noon; www.awish.org
• Tiverton Penguin Plunge; Fogland Beach, Tiverton; noon; www.tivertonlibrary.org
• Annawamscutt Seal Society plunge; Annawamscutt Rd., Barrington; noon
• Westport Polar Jump, The Back Eddy, 1 Bridge Road, Westport; 11 a.m.; 508/636-6500
