Peter T. Gebhard Jr., 93, Westport

Peter TenEyck Gebhard, Jr., age 93, of Westport Harbor and Dartmouth, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012.  He was the loving husband of Elizabeth Meakin Gebhard.

He is also survived by his children and their spouses, Peter III and Sara Gebhard, Margaret Gebhard and Donald Perkins, and Thomas and Julie Gebhard; and seven grandchildren.

Born in Hudson, NY, he was a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Business School.  During World War II, he received a certificate of naval architecture from the United States Naval Academy and served in Newfoundland and Hawaii in Naval support roles.

He was a member of the University Club in Providence and the Acoaxet Club in Westport Harbor.

A memorial service will be held at Saint Andrews-by-the Sea Episcopal Church, Little Compton, on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Andrews-by-the-Sea. A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
