Parade spectators get early start in Bristol

As the old saying goes, the early bird gets the worm. Apply that to Bristol on the Fourth of July, and the early arrivals get the best spot to view the parade.

"We were here at one in the morning," said Jessica Calderone of Bristol. "We had to fight for this spot."

By 6 a.m. she along with Noelani Bates and Billy Dias were just rousing from their sleep, curled up on an inflatable mattress near the corner of Hope Street and Bradford Street.

"Every year we do this," she said.

Despite the policy that prohibits spectators from placing chairs, blankets and other items along the road to claim a spot, Ms. Calderone said that many people were setting up their spots throughout the night.
