Oar art — Artists unleash imaginations on oars, paddles

Posted

Over half of the donated oars and paddles — the older and more weatherbeaten the better, have been painted and decorated by top area artists in advance of the Westport River Watershed Alliance’s fifth annual Winter Art Show and silent auction at the Dedee Shattuck Gallery.

The popular show, which features tired oars and paddles transformed into works of art with local themes, has been extended to two weeks this year. All will be sold at the silent auction that will be the show’s finale on Saturday, March 10, with a reception from 5 to 7. Funds raised benefit the WRWA.

It’s the fifth annual show that got its start using wooden lobster buoys before switching to oars and paddles for its ‘canvas.’

A glance at the first arrivals show that the imagination and talent on display “continue to be amazing,” said the alliance’s Steve Connors. “It’s always exciting to see what our artists have dreamed up.” Submissions come from Westport, Little Compton, Tiverton, Dartmouth and sometimes beyond;

The Winter Art Show and silent auction at the Dedee Shattuck Gallery begin on Saturday, Feb. 24, from noon to 4 p.m. “This event is a fun distraction from the winter doldrums, and takes place in the warm and bright space of the Shattuck Gallery,” the alliance said.

Volunteers are welcome for two-hour time slots during the two weeks of the show, greeting guests and helping to manage the gallery show. For a preview of the silent auction, go to the WRWA web page: www.westportwatershed.org
