Northeast Amateur tees off; State Amateur field is set
PROVIDENCE — The field for the 109th playing of the Rhode Island State Amateur Championship next month is set after the third and final qualifying round was played Monday, June 9, at North Kingstown Golf Club.
A total of 42 players earned their way into the State Am, scheduled for July 7-11 at Montaup Country Club in Portsmouth, at Quonset Point Monday. Included among them were several players with local ties, led by Wannamoisett's Dan Lynch and Jamie Griffiths along with Metacomet's Eric Marchetti. Each shared eighth place with four-over rounds of 74.
Don Wright of West Warwick was the day's medalist, carding a two-under 68.
Another trio of locals — Matthew Corio and Tyler of Wannamoisett as well as Metacomet's Jeff Maher — qualified by sharing 13th at five-over, 75.
City resident Jim Rose, playing out of Swansea C.C., and Wannamoisett's Jeff Giguere tied for 18th at 76. Mike Pierard, of Wannamoisett, finished T24 at 77. Chris Chartier, of Metacomet, qualified with an eight-over, 78. Agawam Hunt's Ben Donaldson was among the final players to qualify, sharing 40th with two others at nine-over, 79.
Those at North Kingstown Monday knew going in the top 41 players and ties would advance to the State Am. They joined players who receive automatic berths due to past performance, such as Metacomet's Brad Valois (2011 and 2013) and Wannamoisett's Charlie Blanchard (2012), the winners of the last three State Ams, and those who punched their tickets last month at qualifiers held at West Warwick and Fenner Hill.
City native and Wannamoisett member Ethan Zexter, shared medalist honors at West Warwick on May 21, carding the same even-par round of 70 as Quidnessett's Trevor Wellen.
Metacomet's Ricky Audette qualified fifth there with a five-over, 75. City resident Chris Holland, playing out of Swansea, shot a 76. The top 16 players and ties qualified at West Warwick.
The top 14 players and ties qualified for the State Am, May 28, at Fenner Hill in Hope Valley. Former champ Ben Tuthill (2000), of Wannamoisett and the new tournament director of the Northeast Amateur Invitational there, qualified in second place with a four-over round of 76.
His clubmates Dave Apuzzo (80), Andrew Jankowski (82) and Taylor Harrington (82) also earned a spot through Fenner Hill as did Metacomet's Greg Lakeway.
