WESTPORT — Past and present members of the Westport Affordable Housing Trust will be attending ribbon-cutting ceremonies for Noquochoke Village, the town’s first mixed-income affordable apartment complex, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 6.
State officials, legislators, and numerous other elected and appointed Westport officials will also be on hand for the ceremony, the culmination of more than a decade’s efforts to create 50 new, affordable apartment units clustered in eight buildings on a former parcel of town-owned land on the south side of American Legion Highway (Rt. 177).
The host for the day will be The Community Builders, Inc. (TCB), a non-profit builder and manager of affordable housing developments throughout the country, which began moving the first tenants into the new units in June.
Tenants, including a number of relocating Westport residents, will be living in a wide range of one, two and three bedroom flats and townhouses, modeled on traditional New England building styles.
Westport Affordable Housing Trust Chair Liz Collins said she and other members of the Trust have been waiting a long time for the first residents to move in to the carefully-planned community. She has been helping to shepherd the development plans for Noquochoke Village through a planning and permitting process dating back to 2005.
“The Community Builders is excited to bring high-quality affordable apartment homes to Westport,” said Andy Waxman, TCB’s vice president of development, New England.
The roughly 30 acres of land at the site was previously zoned for Residence/Agriculture uses before a May 2009 town meeting vote rezoned the property as a special overlay district to encourage the creation of affordable housing opportunities in Westport.
Westport Housing Specialist Leonardi Aray said that the remaining 22 acres of mixed woodlands, known as the Quinn parcel will be preserved as open space for town residents to enjoy, protected with a permanent conservation restriction.
The Community Builders maintains an office onsite to distribute and process rental applications for prospective tenants.
