No cost vaccination clinic comes to Little Compton

LITTLE COMPTON — Anyone, whether a resident of Little Compton or not, can get vaccinated against three types of illnesses on Friday, Jan. 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the gymnasium in Wilbur & McMahon School at 28 Commons, in Little Compton.

The occasion is a "Community Vaccination Clinic" sponsored at no cost by the Rhode island Department of Health. The vaccinations are administered by registered nurses affiliated with The Wellness Company.

The three separate types of vaccinations available (and separately administered) are: for the flu, another for pneumonia, and a third — which is a combined vaccination known as the "Tdap vaccines" — for tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (pertussis).

People seeking vaccinations can obtain any one or a combination of the three, said a spokesperson for the Wellness Company.

Although there is no cost, directly or indirectly, out-of-pocket or otherwise, the spokesperson said that individuals with insurance are being asked to bring their insurance cards so that participating insurance carriers can be billed.

Most people are seeking the flu vaccination, the spokesperson said. "We have plenty of vaccine. We're working with the health department which is supplying us," she said.

There are no age limitations on who can be vaccinated, other than that children must be over the age of six months. Children who are afraid of getting a flu shot in the arm can obtain the vaccination by a mist that is sprayed into the nose, the spokesperson said.

There are no residency requirements. The spokesperson said that Tuesday night, Jan.15, over 700 people were vaccinated in Pawtucket, and on Wednesday night, Jan. 16 over 200 got flu shots in Johnston.
